4th grade - 2018-2019
Cycle 1- Financial Literacy
Grade 4 will be learning about money and trade through two different sources - the Federal Reserve Bank of NY's "It's all about your money" and "We're in the Money" from the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. Both of these organizations, along with countless others, provide wonderful hands on lessons and materials.
Students will learn how economies work and how bartering systems pre-dated the use of currency, as we know it today. They will learn about different forms of currency, both historical and current, and will take a history of the US currency through some online exhibits from the US Treasury Department and the US Mint. We will examine foreign currencies, and will play a game and act out a short skit about bartering, all the while talking about the function and characteristics of money. Through a comic book and video from the FRB NY, they can see how money, banks, checks came into existence. We will also use VISA's Practical Money Skills for Life which provide some wonderful online games that will allow students to learn more.
As a final project, students will be asked to design their own currency. What symbols and pictures would they put on it? Why? This is a great way for them to pull together all the concepts that we covered this unit.

Students can choose any platform or may dress up and present their person any way they wish. The entire class will learn more about some amazing people and the discoveries which have impacted our mathematics world today.
